Tony Peterson was visiting his younger brother, Keith, in Boulder, Colorado, in the late 1990s. They were in a bookshop together when Keith plucked a paperback out of the remainder bin and said: “I’m buying this, do you want one?” Tony looked at the book, which was called Dreams from My Father. It meant nothing to him, but his brother said: “Well, look who wrote it.” The author’s name was Barack Obama. “That’s Barry!” said Keith. In the spring of 1976, Tony and Barry had been pupils together at one of America’s biggest private schools, Punahou, on the Hawaiian island of Honolulu. The school boasted 76 acres of green lawns and woodlands dotted with low buildings topped by squat roofs. There were 3,600 pupils and, that year, only four of them were black males. American politics decides which turn the world politics is going to take next. And if American politics itself is under a compulsion to go through a sea-change, how can the world remain unconcerned? The question is whether the unprecedented will happen or not. Will a black win the confidence of the whites in the land of the reds? Whose land is it that I walk upon after taking birth on this part of it or that? It is my planet and I should be free to walk upon it anywhere and everywhere. That's what the blacks were forcefully made to do when they were taken away as slaves to America from their native Africa where they were born. I should not only be free to walk upon my planet, I should also be free to act upon it. That's what Obama is asking the American whites to let the American blacks do. The land of the planet belongs to none, whether black or white or red, or even brown or yellow. Let's make one single rainbow of all the colors present on earth!
