New business management degree coming:

November 2, 2007 by Christina Graham

Business Management

The Center for Excellence: International Business has begun the development of an International Business Management degree program to offer students in 2008.

This degree program will offer four courses in the fundamentals of International business, marketing, finance, logistics management plus a capstone course.

The program also plans to offer an exchange program, to give students the chance to study abroad, and to bring more international students to OCCC.

Department Chair and Professor of Business Gary Tucker said the emphasis of the program is three fold.

The first emphasis is the students. “We want to provide a safe-haven for students to travel internationally and study amongst other cultures,” Tucker said.

The second emphasis of the program will focus on surrounding businesses, and making them aware of what kind of work the college is doing so they know that OCCC is more than just a general education college.

The third emphasis will be on the college as a whole, and “boosting the college’s ability to say we are a premiere community college.” Tucker said.

Business News Blog Comment:

If business is going global, business management does have to follow suit.

But there is one more aspect to it.

For quite some time now, there has been a national debate going on whether these management degrees are good for anything or not as far as really managing a business is concerned, be it global business or be it local.

The logic given is that management is a trait of personality and not a set of skills learnt in a business school.

Like a promising chess prodigy, who starts showing her/his colors right in the cradle!

Managing a business, the way it is being in the world around today, it's no less (or no more!) than moving chessmen from this square to that and from that to this.

Robbing Peter and paying Paul!

And no business school ever changes the basic personality that you are.

Yes, if you have it, a school can certainly polish it to some extent.

But a school cannot turn a donkey into a horse; or more realistically to say, a horse into a donkey!
