$1M donated to new cancer centre; Canadian-Cancer-Society gift brings west-end hospital's fundraising drive past halfway mark:
March 28, 2008 by MATTHEW VAN DONGEN
A $1-million gift from the Canadian Cancer Society has pushed the fundraising drive for a new St. Catharines hospital complex past the halfway mark.
The donation from the society's Ontario division will help build the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Niagara's first regional cancer centre. "This centre will bring care to patients, which is the way it should work," said Peter Goodhand, CEO of the society's Ontario division.
Goodhand announced the donation at the society's office in Niagara-on-the-Lake Thursday.
The last time he visited that office, Goodhand said, he accepted a donated van to help cancer patients travel the typically long distances between home and cancer treatment centres.
Thursday's donation, he said, will help eliminate the long trips to Hamilton faced by most Niagara cancer patients.
"This centre will turn the equation around, bringing treatment to patients," he said.
The trip to the Hamilton cancer centre wouldn't seem long to healthy people, said Donna Arenburg, a society volunteer and 2007 recipient of the National Medal of Courage.
"But when you're sick, it's like a marathon that there is no training for," the four-time cancer survivor said.
"It means so much to know we're building a first-class cancer centre, right in our backyard."
The cancer centre will be paired with the new hospital complex on Fourth Avenue, which will also feature a cardiac catheterization lab and expanded mental-health services.
Construction could begin this fall, with completion targeted for 2011 or 2012.
The NHS Foundation is trying to raise $25 million toward the tab for the facility. It's raising an additional $15 million for improvements at NHS hospitals across Niagara.
Foundation president and CEO Bill Hallett said the donation pushes the pledged funds to $20.4 million, or just beyond the halfway mark. He noted the centre's supportive care area for patients and families will be named after the Canadian Cancer Society, which will have an office nearby.
"It's a real partnership," he said.

Society News: Canadian Cancer Society
Cancer can never kill the indomitable spirit to live!
The Canadian Cancer Society is a volunteer-based organization which seeks to eradicate cancer and to enhance the quality of life of those suffering from it.
The Society was formed in 1938 in order to educate Canadians about the early-warning signs of the disease, because prior to that time, many people did not seek medical help until their cancer had advanced past a treatable stage.
Since its founding, the society has been granted royal patronage by the Canadian Sovereign, currently Elizabeth II.
