Career Counseling: Life After Boxing for Mike Tyson:

July 26, 2007

Career Counseling

In about a month, the former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion, Mike Tyson, will find himself in the only place about as familiar to him as the ring, the courtroom. Mike could face up to 7 ½ years in prison for felony drug possession.

With the possibility of prison time looming, and a lot of free time on his hands, I think it would be a good idea for Mike Tyson to have a career plan for after his trial. Furthermore, as a lifelong fan, I feel it is my duty to float a few of the many possibilities out into the atmosphere.

As of now, there is no broadcast in America lined up for this fight, and the interest for this unification is less than any in the division I can remember. In a perfect world, Mike Tyson would be in the corner of Sultan Ibragimov while he attempts to win his second title against the self proclaimed “White Tyson.”

People rarely have anything good to say about Tyson, but one, almost universally, agreed upon fact about him is his vast knowledge about the sport of boxing. He would undoubtedly be of service to any fighter, not only in training, but also as a component to bringing in big dollars.

Even if Mike insists he does not have any love for fighting anymore, I cannot believe he no longer has any interest in being involved with the sport. He made an appearance as an analyst for a fight earlier this year and has also, more recently, attempted to gain permission to be in Ibragimov’s corner for his fight with Shannon Briggs.

Another possibility for Mike’s new career would be as an analyst. He has a boxing mind equivalent to an encyclopedia. In interviews and conversations I have heard him rattle off facts about boxing history that very few could challenge.

A possible negative aspect to this career path would be the constant criticism that would come with the job. Mike has never been one who takes well to people’s opinions of him, and there would be the writers and journalists who would disparage him for every little thing he says that is incorrect or off the wall. He would certainly have his share of pessimistic feedback if he chose to walk down the path of an analyst.

Another possibility for Mike Tyson could be his own television show. VH1 is notorious for giving a show to any loser C-list star with a drug problem, why not “Iron” Mike? ESPN has given us Bobby Knight and Barry Bonds, what are they waiting for? In a world where nothing but money and ratings matter, they are really missing the boat on this one. Mike Tyson in our living rooms for half an hour every week-who wouldn’t watch?

I have to listen to thirty different sports writers per day, who think they are superstars because they are on ESPN, chit chat back and forth about a player’s shoes, who they are dating, and what they may or may not have said the night before. ESPN is hardly a sports network at this point, give us what we all really want-Mike Tyson eating dinner, watching television, and giving a running commentary about whatever it is he is watching. (Do you think Mike likes American Idle?)

The truth is, is that Mike Tyson has a world of possibilities under him if he can only find someone who still believes in him and is willing to take a chance. Actually, the person wouldn’t really have to believe in Mike, they would just need to have a love for money because as we have seen Tyson is still able to line people’s pockets with a little bit of loot given the right situation.

Career News Blog Comment: I propose changing the entire career counseling scenario throughout the world by detaching it from its rewards in terms of money and status.

But what will happen of the business structure of our society then?

And how will human society ever get us as the spare parts of its war machinery fighting an unethical war against nature in order to subordinate nature to humanity?

A war against its own natural self!

Our business structure is violating nature at each and every step as well as at each and every level ruining the whole environment around on this planet.
