The death of the packager has long been predicted, but present conditions are prompting a revolution in the services they will offer in the future, says Ian Giles

Circle of Life
Niche Mortgage Packagers' Promise

The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis'. One brush stroke stands for danger, the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger, but recognise the opportunity. It is a saying that appears frequently in lists of famous quotations and has been attributed to several different people. But if the origination of this pearl of wisdom is vague, the sentiment is absolutely clear and provides an excellent focus for the mortgage industry in 2008.

It is natural to baulk at the word 'crisis' being used in association with our industry, but few can argue against the enormity of the impact created by the by the global credit crunch in the second half of last year. The effect of capital market investors losing confidence in mortgage-backed securities completely transformed the working environment for most lenders and the rate of change has been staggering.

But 2008 promises to be a year of great opportunity for those businesses that are able to think on their feet and adapt to new market conditions. Many of the changes we can expect this year were on the cards even before the credit crunch, but the impact of the crunch has accelerated the rate at which businesses need to evolve in order to survive volatile economic conditions.

Focussed Mortgage Packagers

The circle of life comes back to the same square one always, but ALWAYS with a difference!

Brokers who are using a packager should review their procedures in line with the findings of the latest research. This will help the broker to put adequate risk management systems in place, and will help ensure the suitability of advice for any customer who relies on them.

Even when using a packager, it is important for brokers to remember that if they are representing themselves as the provider of advice to customers then they - not the packager - are responsible for that advice.
