Albany - If you live in the Empire State your child could soon get a free college-education. The State Commission on Higher Education presented its preliminary report in Albany Monday.
The report recommends successful students who go to school in poor areas of the state should be promised a free college-education. Those students would have to meet Math, English and graduation requirements. Commission Chairman Hunter Rawlings said this preliminary report is a move in the right direction for higher education in New York State.
New York Governor Elliot Spitzer created the commission in the hopes of improving higher education in the state. Right now this plan is just a proposal. The commission’s final report will be presented to the Governor and Legislature later next year.

Education News Blog Comment:
What a great opportunity is that! Free college education to the poor and the meritorious ones!
As we all know education at the level of college is very costly in America, so much so that everyone is not always able to afford it.
The situation is quite the other way round in some third world countries. Like in India, it is the good school-education (private, not government!) that is much costlier than the good college-education.
In fact education should always be free whether at the level of school or at the level of college. It should be the basic right of the student to get the education of her/his choice without having to pay anything for the same.
When on earth shall we be able to see a day like that!
I hope the day is not too far ahead in future.
