Corporate culture clash keeps educated migrants out of work:
Sunday, July 15, 2007 by Juliana Barbassa
Steve Yeater / AP Alcides Hernandez had a high-profile job at El Salvador's largest utility. After coming to the U.S., he held low-paid jobs until Upwardly Mobile helped him get a position as an electric rate analyst.
In Peru, Ines Gonzalez-Lehman directed a 14-person marketing team at a high-tech firm. After marrying an American and immigrating legally to the U.S., she found herself making copies and answering phones at the bottom of the corporate ladder.
The immigration reform bill that recently failed in the Senate would have increased the number of visas for highly educated workers. But there remain tens of thousands of skilled immigrants like Gonzalez-Lehman who are here and authorized to work, but stuck in jobs where their experience is wasted.

Developing the right organisation culture is not just the responsibility of the human resource department. The top management of every company is proactively involved in the process. And why not, after all the corporate culture has a major impact on employee morale and productivity. It is not about just being a good employer, but about having employees committed to the vision and the strategy of the organisation, and possessing the will and the means to make these a reality.

Express Scripts new headquarters reflect spartan corporate culture:
WEDNESDAY | JULY 25, 2007
When Express Scripts Inc. moved into its new headquarters, Chief Executive George Paz didn't need much help decorating his new office. It's only 10 by 12 feet, just a bit larger than Paris Hilton's first jail cell.
This Fortune 500 CEO doesn't have a window, either. Those are reserved for employees working in cubicles. Every employee with an office sits in the same size box along an inside wall.
Express Scripts' new headquarters on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus reflects its Spartan corporate-culture.

A corporate culture turned fatal:
Wednesday, July 4, 2007
The final report of the government's Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission on the April 25, 2005, West Japan Railway accident in Hyogo Prefecture — which killed the train driver and 106 passengers and injured 562 people — has blamed the railway company's corporate culture for the fatal accident. It specifically mentioned JR West's punitive re-education program for train drivers who had committed mistakes such as overruns.
It said the driver, who had overrun a train stop shortly before the accident, was so worried about being subjected to the re-education program that he was absorbed in listening to radio communications between the conductor and the control center, and failed to apply the brake in time as the train went into a sharp curve. It called on JR West to refrain from punishing employees who report incidents and instead adopt a program that teaches them in a practical way how to improve their driving skills and how to prevent accidents. This is reasonable, and JR West should follow the calls with sincerity.
Culture News Blog Comment: What is culture when it comes to the technology and culture leading our way to the corporate-culture in business as well as in life?
Technology does have its effect on human life.
All for good!
But the corporate-culture, as it is in today's world, is poisoning all that good!
We need nuclear power, but the world corporate gives us the nuclear threat.
We need health drinks, but the multi-national corporate provides us with cola all along.
We need organic food, but the food-giants lure us with their fast food with addictive tastemakers added to it.
We need space on earth, but the corporate offers us flats in the sky.
We need health that comes for free, but the corporate offers us costly treatment and habituates us to popping pricey pills.
We need a technologically advanced life, but the corporate adds its profit-motif to it and turns it into a slow poison for us, that comes at a price in order to fatten their wallet!
