Entertainment tonight? Don't be looking for Romo:

Mon, Aug. 06, 2007 by RANDY GALLOWAY

Entertainment Tonight

SAN ANTONIO -- For those who worried and fretted over Tony Romo's very active and high profile off-season social life, for those who ranted that Romo had suddenly become more nightlife celebrity than an NFL quarterback with a future, well, here's the way Tony answers all that:

(1) The endless stories of bright lights and shiny women were mainly an over-hyped creation of the national entertainment media.

By Romo's loose count, if you heard or read 10 items connecting him with good times and girls, maybe three were true.

"I got a lot of laughs out of some of that stuff," he shrugged. "I knew it wasn't true, but what are you gonna do?"

(2) Living in the neon nightlife, it's all over now, anyway. As of three weeks ago, he says he has become a football monk, dedicated to the game and the team.

"Been to Hooters once, to a movie another time, and that's it," Tony says of the Cowboys' training camp stay in San Antonio. "The season has started. It's all about football now."

Actually, Romo was a dedicated football disciple throughout the spring and summer, long before training camp kicked off two weeks ago. He had perfect attendance at all Valley Ranch workout functions, be it the mandatory or voluntary sessions. That doesn't even count just showing up at the facility on his own.

"Nobody," said tight end Jason Witten, "can question Tony's commitment to the job and to the team."

But many of the entertainment magazines and TV shows also gave Romo almost the Hollywood treatment for the past six months.

"I know a girl [guess who] in the business that those magazines follow, a girl who I like, so being with her, then you are going to end up in those magazines," he said, smiling.

When former teammate Keyshawn Johnson retired this summer and went to work for ESPN, one of his first strong TV comments was to list Romo as No. 1 on the most over-hyped list among NFL players.

Keyshawn wasn't being mean about it. In many ways, what he said is true. Romo took the football world suddenly by storm, starting that one Sunday night on national TV in late October in Charlotte, N.C.

By early December, Tony had become an instant national celebrity. It happened in a hurry. It happened because he was the new quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. It happened because he was almost magical for like six straight games.

Then came football troubles in December, and a season capped by the dropped snap in Seattle in January.

Apparently, some people thought Romo would go into hiding after Snap-fu, and live in a cave until training camp started in August.

Of course, that was not Romo, nor was it supposed to be. And his "celebrity status" is certainly on display here in San Antonio, where large crowds that show up for these practices regularly show their love for all things Romo.

"I get uncomfortable with that, all those people chanting your name, but I try to handle it the best I can," he said. "But if it's up to me, the only time I will ever appear on TV will be in a football game. I'm honest when I say I really don't like the other stuff, but I deal with it, and try to be nice about it."

Still having not played enough NFL games to qualify for a full season of work, Romo's name recognition in the NFL is immense, and goes far beyond his actual accomplishments to date.

And that name opened doors in the off-season, allowing him to meet and rub elbows with big-timers far removed from the football scene.

Yet, of all the people Romo met, the one who impressed him the most came from his job-related roots.

"I'd say Joe Montana was the most normal, genuine person I've ever met," he said, "I'm talking to him for a while and I'm thinking this is a guy I'd like to hang out with, have a beer with. Joe Montana is totally grounded, despite all his accomplishments as a quarterback."

One Montana comment still sticks with Romo.

"He told me, 'I enjoy watching you play.' There are very few times when you go, 'wow.' Well, that was one of those times for me."

Fast forward to right here, right now in training camp, and the debate goes on nationally, even locally, on how good Romo will be this season and in the future.

Because of that "over-hyped" perception, no QB in the league may be under greater scrutiny than Romo in '07.

But one thing is obvious here. He has the respect of his teammates, as a player, a person, and a leader. All quarterbacks have to earn that, and it takes awhile for many. Romo has done it in half a season of starting, and in his off-season dedication.

At the moment, Romo's biggest honor in football is he's already a team leader.

All those other questions, however, still await an answer, starting in September.

Entertainment News Blog Comment: Serving your senses hot is what a definition of entertainment is, be it some particular best-selling hot entertainment book, or be it adult entertainment concerned more with what entertainment tonight is available in the vicinity of all the entertainment centers around.

Our senses get a new lease of life at the entertainment centers that our modern day culture provides to us so sparingly!
