The Importance Of Eye Health - Many parents unaware of free screening for children:
October 22, 2007
Many children with eye problems are missing out on diagnosis as parents are not taking advantage of free eye tests for under 16s, experts have warned.
A report from the Association of Optometrists says research suggests 5% of children aged six and 10% of 12 year olds have an uncorrected eye problem.
Many parents are simply unaware that under-16s can get free eye tests. Previously, eyes have been checked at various stages of a child’s life, by a health visitor, or at school.
The most common problems in children, which need early detection, include squints, lazy eyes, and long and short-sightedness. If these problems remain undetected, they can cause permanent visual problems throughout life.
The Association of Optometrists' chief executive, Bob Hughes, said it should be compulsory for children to have an eye test before starting school.
Health News Blog Comment:
Let's go into a little depth vis-à-vis eye health here in the health news blog comment on the above health news item:
There is more myth than truth that is prevailing regarding eye health and eye care in our society.
I need telling you here in my health news blog about my past a little.
Let me go down the memory lane...
As I came to my senses, I found myself a victim to myopia. I just couldn't see with my left eye. The world was all blurred in front of it. Yes, my right eye could see everything clear.
I complained it to my parents. They took me to an optometrist who checked my eyes with his lenses. My right eye was perfect but the left one needed a lens, powered -5.00D. The optometrist made me a pair of eyeglasses and I put it on my eyes.
O my God, my life just changed after that. I had lost all my freedom. I was supposed to take care of my glasses each and every moment, which my nature just didn't accept.
My poor eye health!
I kept my spectacles in my drawer and forgot I ever had them. I was able to see clear with my one eye at least. So I did. I even forgot I had a bad pair of eyes and kept pursuing my studies till I passed my engineering and got a job in the Defense Research and Development Organization as a scientist.
But before joining my job, I was supposed to clear my medical examination that included checking my eye health too. Now I needed a pair of glasses for me in order to get my eye test cleared. The old pair was a story of around 15 years back and I didn't have the faintest idea as to where it was.
I again went to an optometrist and got my eyes tested for a new pair of glasses.
To my utter astonishment, I came to discover that my new number was -2.25D for right eye and exactly the same, i.e., -2.25D for my left eye too!
How did my number come down? The good eye worsened, that was okay; but the bad eye corrected itself to such a great extent - that was beyond my apprehension. I was always given the impression that an eye that had gone bad, could never correct itself to any degree. Once bad, forever bad! That's what ophthalmology had taught us.
Had my eye health improved or worsened?
I kept wondering about it till I turned 53 years old!
And then, my astonishment knew no bounds.
I am talking about the day, when at age 53 my vision immediately went clear to 20/20 from a blurred 20/140 accidentally, and then fell back to 20/140 again.
And then I could repeat the correction to 20/20 at will whenever I felt like doing so.
But then, why didn't I stay there? I mean, at 20/20.
Because my mind didn't know what my body was doing in order to perform the feat. I wasn't able to comprehend the experience of the action my body was performing every time it did so.
OK, but why was my body coming out of that stage that it was always able to go to, at will? Why didn't it stay there for good?
I could have done that but then I wouldn't have known. I was, in fact, intentionally falling back again and again to my old habitual pattern in order to be able to once again enter back into the new state, and try to comprehend as to what my body was actually doing when it was seeing clear.
Falling back was easy because it was habitual.
Entering the new state meant keeping aware and not going into a routine mechanically.
All habit is mechanical routine! Only! The bad habits as well as the good (?) ones!
And I fell back not out of routine but out of my conscious decision to do so. I wanted to learn.
Otherwise it would have been the same thing that once already had happened with me during all these years - the diopter number of my left eye coming down to -2.25D by age 20 from -5.00D in childhood - without my knowing as to how it had happened.
I wouldn't miss the chance this time.
I kept swinging back and forth between good eye health and the poor one; sometimes doing this to my body and sometimes that, checking the results every time by comparing them with the experience of my body on the 12th of December; along with the clarity of my vision every time, to my habitual blur of 20/140.
What all did I not do, and which all parts of the body did I not go to, in order to logically learn something out of my new spontaneous experience that I had taken to be a great promise for the mankind!
Today, I can very easily write it all as a retrospect in my health news blog here but, believe me, I was in such a total darkness that time as could really have turned me mad.
If only I could be able to tell the world - HOW...even if through my health news blog only!
I also started studying ophthalmology.
By now, I knew there was an on-off switch in the body that the mankind was permanently keeping in the off position and that, if turned on, would take the body spiraling toward a new state of existence - evolutionary in nature.
Does my health news blog story written above inspire you to think about eye health as well as about health in general in a new light that humanity hasn't seen yet?
