Friends Forever

KUALA LUMPUR: Once good friends, they became bitter political rivals. Yesterday, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and IPF president Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan announced their undying relationship in front of 3,000 IPF delegates.

They hugged with tears in their eyes. The delegates burst into applause.

“Once we were friends, then we separated and now we have rejoined. This friendship is permanent and there is no departure. I will only depart at my death,” said Pandithan.

He said the MIC supremo was the “true leader of the Indian community” and bestowed the Wira Kaum India title on Samy Vellu at IPF's 15th general assembly.

Samy Vellu turned poetic when describing the respect Pandithan enjoyed among his followers.

Pandithan, who once regarded Samy Vellu as his mentor, was an MIC vice-president, Tapah MP and parliamentary secretary to the Trade and Industry Ministry in June 1988.

He was sacked after he started a fast-to-death effort in a bid to get charges of inciting violence and unrest within the party dropped. He also brought a coffin to the MIC headquarters in protest.

After expulsion from MIC on July 16, 1988, Pandithan tried to return to the party but was unsuccessful and in August 1990, he formed IPF.

His several attempts to join Barisan were thwarted by Samy Vellu and his scathing attacks on the MIC president failed to make headway.

However, when Pandithan fell ill and was hospitalised last year, Samy Vellu visited him and the two fell into an emotional reunion.

Oden, Conley Jr. friends forever, but no longer teammates:

Friends Forever

NEW YORK — How time flies. Wasn't it barely yesterday they were 12 years old, getting to know one another as kids who loved to play basketball? They would go together like peas and carrots after that — from AAU to high school in Indianapolis to Ohio State.Never one, it seemed, without the other. Never hardly losing either, it seemed.

Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. Boyhood pals. Never apart, by Conley's count, more than three straight days all those years. And now they've grown up to become millionaires on the same stage.

But Thursday night, they were wearing different caps.

As Conley said, "We knew this day was going to come ... we were just preparing to go on and be without each other."

Or to be exact, Oden would go to Portland, and Conley to Memphis.

So it was a night to say hello to the NBA and in a way, goodbye to one another.

"They never said a lot to each other, but they always seemed to know what each other was thinking," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said, watching it all from the Oden family table. "You can't coach that.

"When Greg asked me to come, I told him, 'You think this is just a dream of yours? It's a dream of mine, too."

Over at the Conley table, Rene Conley watched Oden go to the stage as the No. 1 pick, and her son 17 minutes later at No. 4.

"They're just totally opposite of each other," she said. "But I almost think they have mental telepathy. They finish each other's thoughts, they've been around each other. It's almost like brothers."

"I almost have to pinch myself. I was just telling my husband, I never would have believed they would be drafted at the same time."

But now they go their separate ways, each with promises to keep.

Conley has the less arduous path. He is expected to be a good, productive, valuable point guard. He is not expected to be Superman.

But it won't be easy being Oden. The Pope wouldn't be this anticipated in Portland. Then again, the Pope can't block shots that well.

While NBA gurus said Oden or Kevin Durant was a close call for the No. 1 pick, a poll on the Blazers website was a landslide. As of Thursday afternoon, 67% were going for Oden.

All that will be asked of Oden, then, is to start stockpiling titles, and shift the balance of power in a Western Conference, with all its muscle.

Piece of cake.

Also outdo Durant, to make the decision look good. The Blazers don't need any more draft infamy. They're the franchise that once took Sam Bowie instead of Michael Jordan.

"I know we're going to be connected for a long time," Oden said of Durant.

Oh, and one other thing. Stay out of any off-court messiness. The Blazers have had their share of trouble with that in the past.

"I have a 1:30 bed time," Oden said. "So I won't be out late at night."

So they left for different horizons Thursday night. Conley one way, Oden another.

And yet ... there are still ties that bind. Mike Conley Sr. — Olympic gold medalist, the AAU coach who brought them together, and now a rookie agent — will be representing both.

"They trust me. I trust them," he said. "We've got this far together. We'll go a lot farther together."

And both plan to get back to Ohio State for unfinished business. "I had the greatest year of my life," Oden said of his freshman season, but he still wants a degree. So does Conley.

"My mom would never let me live if I didn't," he said.

"That's right," Rene Conley said.

But Thursday was for celebration, between two men who did nearly everything they wanted together — except the Florida game in April. Not even Thursday night could make up for that.

"I still lost," Oden said. "They still won two national championships in a row, and that doesn't change. I'm always going to have that memory of that loss forever."

He'll also forever have Mike Conley as a friend. But starting Thursday, no longer a teammate.
