Lesotho's Child Health Care Crisis: Six Doctors -- 800000 Children:

September 4, 2007 by KATE SNOW

Health Care

HIV-positive 2-year-old Lebohang is thriving after receiving anti-retroviral medicine, and he likes to write in my notebook.

In a dimly-lit ward in the one public hospital in Lesotho's capital city, Maseru, the sickest infants have to take turns using the only oxygen tanks available. One mother sits nervously watching her tiny child's labored breathing. Another is slumped over, perched halfway on a chair with her torso bent over on her child's bed, her face buried in the sheets.

Mothers are everywhere here. They stay with their children 24 hours a day and administer medicine the way nurses and doctors do at hospitals in the United States. They have no choice.

In this small mountainous nation there are nearly two million people, including about 800,000 children. At the moment, there are six pediatricians to serve them all. You read that right. Six.

Only one pediatrician is on staff at the public hospital, Dr. Grace Phiri.

UAW wary of health care changes:

September 4, 2007 by Sharon Silke Carty

DETROIT — A growing number of United Auto Workers union members oppose a health-care plan that has been hailed as the solution to many of the auto industry's woes.

Autoworkers are worried that the plan, which would shift the responsibility for retiree health-care costs to the UAW, is risky and could leave thousands of retirees under- or uninsured if the plan goes broke, which has happened at two other companies that tried similar deals.

"What they're proposing is to shortchange us," says Greg Shotwell, a labor activist in Grand Rapids, Mich.

More Americans seeking foreign health care services:

September 4, 2007 by DUDLEY ALTHAUS

MONTERREY, MEXICO — Whipped by rising medical costs and spurred on by the globe-shrinking travel of our age, growing numbers of Americans are heading abroad to treat much of what ails them.

Uninsured, under-insured or just plain unhappy with American health-care, they seek out a handful of foreign medical meccas, including Mexico, where they can get cut-rate deals on everything from face-lifts to root canals, heart bypasses to new hips.

It has been branded medical tourism, and many experts believe the trend will become one of the hottest niches in both global medicine and travel in the coming decades.

Health News Blog Comment: The health of humanity defines and determines the health of its individuals that we are.

Our health is at peril and so is humanity's!

So let's not only be bothered about our own personal health individually without caring for the health of humanity.

And that is what the proper health care is that we need here on earth!
