CUMMINS: How to make friends the new way:
October 20, 2007 by TERRY STAWAR
Imagine not having friends other than your dog or goldfish. I find myself talking more to my dog now that many of my former friends have expired, and the few remaining ones shun me. It’s not that they’re snobs, but to put it bluntly, they do not have time for me. Many of them are holed up with their computers making digital-type friends with other people who are also holed up. They need to get out in the fresh air and sunlight. They look hollow, gaunt and stooped. That’s what computers do to you.
I do have one friend who told his children to come and get the computer they had installed for him and to throw it in a junked-car crusher. His children thought they were enriching their father’s life whereby he could escape dreariness by sitting all day, which he was already doing, and making new friends by putting his bio and picture on Facebook. They say once on Facebook, you’ll give up food and sleep and if not careful, wet your pants.
Another of my dear ex-friends, who would give you his shirt and pants, gives me nothing now unless I request it through an e-mail. Ernie made the mistake of letting one of his grandkids put him on Facebook, and now he’s fighting off elderly widows all over the cyber-world, who are begging him for digital companionship. If I have to make or keep friends by connecting with them through cyber-space, I’ll get a second dog.
Friends Blog Comment:
Computers have turned up all the old terminologies and invented a totally new methodology for how to make friends.
Now, this is a different issue altogether that these new friends are all digital. They are not flesh and bone people sitting in front of you but just holed up with their computer screens in some remote corner of the world.
Interaction has gone faster and making friends vaster but the content you get out of them has awfully reduced keeping you as friend-hungry as you are with none of them as yours!
Making friends the digital way has gone real easy but also real worthless too!
