Britney Spears Upsets The Human Society:

July 17, 2007 by Cher Tippetts

Human Society

As if she hasn't got enough to worry about what with family estrangements, the rumblings that K-Fed may seek custody of their sons and generally being a train wreck, Britney has gone and upset The Humane Society too.

The US-based society is apparently so worried that Britney set a bad example when she bought a purebred Yorkshire Terrier puppy at the weekend, that they have seen fit to release a statement.

The Society's director of outreach for companion animals Stephanie Shain said: "Most dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills - factory-like facilities, churning out purebred and designer puppies in large numbers."

"Every time someone purchases a dog from a pet store, they risk perpetuating the horrendous business of puppy mills."

The organization is also concerned that Britney purchased the $3,000 puppy on a whim.

Shain contines, "Choosing a dog is a major lifestyle decision that should not be taken lightly. We suggest that people take time to choose a member of their family, and to be sure they are working with a reputable breeder."

Waukesha human society gets nearly $1 million from estate:

Sunday, August 12, 2007

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County has received a bequest of close to $1 million from the estate of a couple described as animal lovers.

The donation of $960,000 came from the estate of Lester R. and Marie J. Howitt Winzenried.

Lester, who inherited real estate and other financial holdings from his father, operated a butcher shop and grocery store in downtown Waukesha for many years before he died in 2000. The family also farmed several parcels of land, and his wife died in 2005.

“They always had dogs and cats on the farm,” said Lynn Olenik, the society’s executive director. “They were animal lovers, and that’s why they believed in HAWS.”

Three who saved 'Miracle Mattie' dog receive honor from Human Society:

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

DECATUR - With "Miracle Mattie" looking on, her rescuers received Hero Award recognition.

Irene Peterson of the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County presented plaques Tuesday to Mike Skorzak, Canadian National Railway conductor, and Roy Austin and Lonny Trelz of the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center "for their heroic efforts in saving Mattie," a 2 1/2 year-old brown Boxer-mix dog.

"Miracle Mattie" was hit by a train or jumped from a railroad trestle June 5, falling 50 feet into brush alongside Stevens Creek on the northwest side of Decatur. She had been wandering for a week after escaping from an open door at the Amanda Evitt residence.

The following day as the train returned to Decatur, Skorzak spotted the dog. "I thought it was dead," he said. "Then the dog raised its head. I called Macon County Animal Control."

Austin and Trelz responded, found Mattie and carried her to safety on a stretcher. Mattie's back side was paralyzed.

The Humane Society was notified.

After preliminary treatment at the Northgate Pet Clinic in Decatur, Mattie was taken to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Urbana. Mattie had a collapsed lung and underwent back surgery for a fractured disc.

In awarding the Hero plaques, Irene Peterson said: "Mike, your call made it possible for Mattie to be here today. Otherwise, Mattie would have died a horrible death. Roy and Lonny, your determination to search and find Mattie, your gentle and caring treatment of a seriously injured dog is above and beyond the call of duty.

Society News Blog Comment: Is human society a humane society?

I find it more inhumane than humane.

I everyday see people stopping their cars at the scene of a road accident, for a moment; sympathizing with the accident victim a bit; giving their 'expert comments' to the crowd assembled around, thinking someone in the crowd will take care before the police arrive; and then racing their cars to their destination again caring the least if the victim stays alive or succumbs to her/his injuries before 'someone' takes care.

And now, in the names of human societies alias humane societies we are more bothered about animals and dogs than we are about humans!
