Internal competition keeps Kerry clear of comfort zone:
Sunday September 23 2007
IT'S déja vu all over again. With Kerry defying all the doomsayers (including myself) and landing back-to-back titles, the rest of the counties are busy mulling over the most pertinent question for 2008 -- just how do you beat a talented, confident Kerry side?
Monaghan should have beaten Kerry but were stung by the resilience of the Ó Sés. I thought Dublin would then finish the job but were out-thought and out-fought when it really mattered. Yet, Dublin did have their chances. Then, sharpened by a 17-year famine, I was sure Cork would put it right up to Kerry, but they never got out of the traps.
So what's the secret? Tradition, approach, cuteness, coaching, an nádúr? The truth is it's probably a little bit of everything including ferocious competition within the county.
Competition drives football in Kerry. Competition for places, competition for performance, competition for medals.
Competition Blog Comment:
Tackling with internal competition is much tougher than it is with the competition from outside. Here you have to break your total powers in two different parts and make one compete with the other.
In fact, whenever we give a break to competing with the outside forces, we do have to go through the inner competition as such. It is because our mind has gone addicted to the competitive mode in order to come out a winner.
If we do not win, we feel like having lost something of importance. It's a kind of intoxication that inspires us to do better, but only in order to win. If the win is easily available, we'll let 'doing better' go to hell! We'll forget the rigors of competition whether outer or inner.
When shall we start doing a thing for the love of doing it and not for the love of winning?
