Setting, achieving goals key to success:
October 27, 2007 by Jerry Osteryoung
I often ponder why some entrepreneurs are very successful and others do not fare as well. I am convinced that the answer lies in setting goals and monitoring them to make sure that they are met.
Is someone who inherits $10 million successful? No! Is someone successful if he takes a stock broker's advice and, consequently, makes millions? Again, the answer is emphatically "no!" Real success, both in life and in business, is the achievement of goals. It is this process, not the outcome, which brings success.
In my opinion, writing this column and being an endowed professor at Florida State University does not make me successful. Rather, I am successful (assuming that this is true - and a lot of people would question this) because I have set goals and achieved them. It is not seeing my article or my picture in the paper that really makes me feel good; it is the crafting of the article that really lights my fire. I feel that I have far surpassed my original expectations for my life, and I was able to do so because I made a plan - one that I have really enjoyed executing.
Now, I know how glib achieving a goal sounds. Making a goal is easy, but achieving one is hard. Just look at how many people's New Year's resolutions go unmet. However, overcoming hardship to reach a desired end is what success is really about, and the following two elements are absolutely essential to this process: overcoming doubts and setting priorities.
Success Blog Comment:
Every single person on earth seems to be in search of the key to success.
But why is it so that everyone is after success so much?
And if we are after success so much, doesn't it imply that right now, at the moment, we are a failure as such?
Isn't that a psychological complex that our success-oriented culture forces us to live with all through our life?
Why can't I do something, or for that matter, everything on earth just for the love of doing it and not for the success it's going to bestow upon me?
The two cannot stay together - the love of doing a thing and the idea of being successful by doing it.
Or if we say it's the love of doing what you are doing that is the real key to success...not the idea of success but whatever it is that you call success as such in its concrete terms?
If you really love doing something, you don't need setting goals for it to be successful!
