Census finds that in love and marriage, Americans 'try, try again':
September 19, 2007 by Jennifer Barrett
Love leading to marriage. It's still a beloved American tradition - even if it takes us a few attempts to get it right, according to a report released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The report, drawn from 2004 data, showed that most people make only one trip down the aisle during their lives. But among those who were once divorced, more than half of all men and more than 4 in 10 women were remarried. The median time between divorce and remarriage is about three and a half years.
"There's nothing in there [the report] that suggests that we're giving up on marriage as an institution in our society" as some have speculated is happening, said Alan Hawkins, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University. "Even if we don't succeed once, we try, try again."
Marriage Blog Comment:
What is the relationship between love and marriage?
Love is right now here; you cannot predict it for the next moment there. Marriage is a life-long promise.
I promise to love you for the rest of my life.
That too, exclusively!
How do I know? Is love a conscious decision or is it a spontaneous one?
Ain't I lying when I take the marriage vows with you?
An institution based on the basic lie cannot have a strong foundation of passion beneath it. It's only later if not sooner that it is bound to die its death.
Whether divorce ensues or not, but the initial passion does get lost.
Every honest person will vouch for that.
Either love remains or marriage. The two cannot co-exist together.
