“Tonight we recognize the accomplishments of 35 students,” said Ian Cathcart, president of Wilton’s chapter of the National Honor Society.
Last Monday, Nov. 5, the society inducted eight seniors and 27 juniors at a ceremony held in the Clune Center at Wilton High School. “We are proud to welcome you as members of the society.”
Dr. Gary Richards, superintendent of schools, was the ceremony’s keynote speaker and commended the students’ abilities, “considerable hard work” and the commitment of their teachers and parents.
He encouraged the inductees to “continue to grow intellectually while cultivating emotional intelligence.”
Dr. Richards’ speech focused on developing emotional intelligence, which he said, was composed of five factors: self-awareness, mood management, self-motivation, empathy, and the ability to manage relationships.
Emotional intelligence has “proven to be a better predictor of future success” than grades and extracurricular activities, he said.
Dr. Richards told the students he hoped they would developed a “deeper understanding of acting confidently but with humility as you make your way through this world.”

The National Honor Society (NHS), established in 1921, is a recognition program for American high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Students are selected for membership through an established school chapter in secondary public and accredited private schools by a five member Faculty Council. Candidates must meet the chapter's requirement for scholarship, service, leadership and character in order to be selected for membership.
Continued participation in service projects is required to retain membership. Members must also maintain the chapter's required cumulative GPA.
