Candidate vows to serve no religion but to be a leader of Americans of all beliefs:
December 7, 2007 by GLEN JOHNSON
Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney gives an address entitled, "Faith in America, " Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas --His campaign at a crossroads, Republican Mitt Romney said Thursday that his Mormon faith should neither help nor hinder his quest for the White House and vowed to serve the interests of the nation, not the church, if elected president.
"When I place my hand on the Bible and take the oath of office, that oath becomes my highest promise to God," Romney said in a speech that explicitly recalled remarks John F. Kennedy made in 1960 in an effort to quell anti-Catholic bias.
After declining for months to address the issue of his Mormonism directly, Romney switched course as polls showed widespread unease about his religion -- and showed him losing his once-sizable lead in the opening Iowa caucuses to Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister and former governor of Arkansas.
Romney said some believe that a forthright embrace of his religion will "sink my candidacy. If they are right, so be it. But I think they underestimate the American people."
Religion News Blog Comment:
No religion comes out to be taken as the safest bet when it comes to serve the political interests of a nation.
It is so simply because there are so many religions in a single nation being served by one single political body of the land.
And unless you at least appear to be religiously unbiased, you cannot be relied upon as a political representative by the religions you don't belong to.
So the best mask is the mask of no-religion at all.
I ask a very simple question. If your human awareness has risen to such a high level as forbids being associated with any limited fragment of humanity religion wise, why hasn't it done so nation wise also; why are you still having your allegiance intact to this nation or that?
Why don't you say no-nation just like you say no-religion in your public announcements?
