Salu Tuputala lost 30kg on the latest Otara Boards’ Forum parenting course but reckons she’s gained a whole lot more.

She was among about 60 Otara parents and grandparents to graduate from the Parent Team Network programme last week, their testimonies of changed lives bringing tears and cheers from the audience.

The parenting sessions at Rongomai, Wymondley Rd, Dawson and Bairds Mainfreight primary schools covered topics such as household routines, healthy school lunches, first aid, budgeting, walking for life, numeracy and literacy activities for families and protecting children from gangs.

Of all the changes in her life brought about by the course, Ms Tuputala says the biggest has come from the walking group.

Since her marriage and three children, she’d gone from size 14 to "a plus size 20".

"I was always feeling down most of the time because of the size that I was."

Walking with her group twice a week and healthy eating tips also learnt on the parenting course saw her shed 30kg and kick her "lazy" addiction to the car.

Now instead of using the disabled parking she drives to the far side of the carpark and walks back. If there’s no time for a walk with the kids, she puts on some music at home and "we’re all dancing".

In fact, we need making parenting a university course just like mathematics and languages are.

And it should be a compulsory course for that matter.

A compulsory parenting course in school as well as at the college level!

Isn't the right parenting the most necessary thing that humanity requires on earth today?

And do we really know what right parenting in its essence is?

We give them morals.

We give them more fears.

We turn them greedier.

We sow the seeds of ambition in them.

We rob them of their curiosity and turn them anxious.

We rob them of their playfulness and turn them into disciplined robots sitting quiet in the boring classroom.

And then we, in conspiracy with the teachers in the school, feed mechanical information into their creative brains in the most non-creative manner turning these delicate brains into insensitive, cunning minds.

What we, at the end of the day, come up with is ignorance turned into cunningness along with fears and avarices multiplied manifolds!

We do not know what parenting should be like!
