Kathie Karkheck, answers helpline phones at The Parenting Network, an organization dedicated to strengthening parenting and preventing child abuse. Last year, the service received 4,586 calls.
Incoherent at times, the caller cries and screams into the phone, "He's out of control!" Her teenage son is skipping school, hanging out with the wrong crowd and "mouthing off." She's at her wits' end and can't take it anymore.
At the other end of the line is Kathie Karkheck, who listens intently as the mother vents her frustration at having a disrespectful teenager who is disrupting the household.
Once a go-to place for parents seeking advice on such age-old issues as potty training or weaning toddlers from a pacifier, the nearly 30-year-old Parent Helpline is increasingly fielding calls from stressed-out parents with out-of-control teenagers.
Last year, the free, anonymous service responded to 811 calls related to teen issues.
"These are parents who are in crisis. They are stressed. The calls are getting a little more intense," said Karkheck, head operator of the service provided by The Parenting Network.
Parenting Blog Comment:
Parenting help could at least let parents vent their frustrations out; even if it couldn't do anything concrete for them.
Not only that, in more than few cases it could even suggest something really workable.
Although help can't give you an insight into parenting yet in emergencies it could be of real help to someone in emotional distress over her/his frustrations.
Human interaction over an issue of importance is the key to the spreading of knowledge.
But insight comes through one's own acute observation and subtle sensitivity only.
