Glimpse into The Joy of Responsibility

Parenting poems, at times, may give us a glimpse of insight into the joy of responsibility. Whatever, they are always good to read at least once!

A. S. J. Tessimond:

Poem on parenting titled The Children Look At The Parents:

We being so hidden from those who
Have quietly borne and fed us,
How can we answer civilly
Their innocent invitations?

How can we say "we see you
As but-for-God's-grace-ourselves, as
Our caricatures (we yours), with
Time's telescope between us"?

How can we say "you presumed on
The accident of kinship,
Assumed our friendship coatlike,
Not as a badge one fights for"?

How say "and you remembered
The sins of our outlived selves and
Your own forgiveness, buried
The hatchet to slow music;

Shared money but not your secrets;
Will leave as your final legacy
A box double-locked by the spider
Packed with your unsolved problems"?

How say all this without capitals,
Italics, anger or pathos,
To those who have seen from the womb come
Enemies? How not say it?

Raymond A. Foss:

Parenting poem titled Neglectful Parents:

How could they lose him,
he was only twelve,
not know he was with them?
Not know for a full day’s journey
assuming he was with family
No idea where he was,
frantically searching for four days
Finding him safe; but they didn’t know that
didn’t know he was safe in church
where he had stayed
while they didn’t know where
he was for five days

Luke 2:41-52
In today’s world, this is probably
how it would be reported.

Robert Burns:

Parenting poem titled How cruel are the parents:

HOW cruel are the parents
Who riches only prize,
And to the wealthy booby
Poor Woman sacrifice!
Meanwhile, the hapless Daughter
Has but a choice of strife;
To shun a tyrant Father’s hate—
Become a wretched Wife.

The ravening hawk pursuing,
The trembling dove thus flies,
To shun impelling ruin,
Awhile her pinions tries;
Till, of escape despairing,
No shelter or retreat,
She trusts the ruthless Falconer,
And drops beneath his feet.

Sukasah Syahdan:

Parenting poem titled Dear Parents:

dear parents
hoary and weatherbeaten
silently take turns ailing

William Matthews:

Parenting poem titled Poem (The lump of coal my parents teased):

The lump of coal my parents teased
I'd find in my Christmas stocking
turned out each year to be an orange,
for I was their sunshine.

Now I have one C. gave me,
a dense node of sleeping fire.
I keep it where I read and write.
"You're on chummy terms with dread,"

it reminds me. "You kiss ambivalence
on both cheeks. But if you close your
heart to me ever I'll wreathe you in flames
and convert you to energy."

I don't know what C. meant me to mind
by her gift, but the sun returns
unbidden. Books get read and written.
My mother comes to visit. My father's

dead. Love needs to be set alight
again and again, and in thanks
for tending it, will do its very
best not to consume us.

These are the parenting poems that appealed me quite a bit - in a way; they are my personal choice from amongst a host of them.

I'll keep adding more to them as and when I come across the ones that touch me deep.

Keep checking, if you please!
