Parenting styles linked to child BMI:

December 17, 2007

Parenting Styles

Australian scientists suggest that permissive or disengaged fathers are more likely to have overweight or obese preschool children.

According to the article published in the journal of Pediatrics, four- to five-year-old children had a 35 percent higher body mass index when their fathers were disengaged.

Findings show the risk was increased to 59 percent with permissive dads.

The study has reported no similar association between the mothers' parenting style and the preschooler's weight.

The researchers found that greater paternal control was strongly associated with a decreased likelihood of the child having a higher BMI.

Researchers concluded that warm, firm, and authoritative parenting results in the best child outcome.

Parenting Blog Comment:

Parenting styles do matter, and for that matter they matter more than the genetic disposition does.

But when the researchers suggest replacing permissiveness with authority, they are making a mistake.

Being firm doesn't mean being authoritative, rather it means being more democratic in attitude and approach.

A permissive father can never be a democratic one, as he doesn't have a say of his own to be listened to, he being an equal part of the family system.

Nor can an authoritative father ever be a democratic one since he doesn't listen to what children want to say and do.

Being democratic is an art like walking on a tight rope, which very few parents have in their attitude.

Whatever, there is no alternative to being democratic when it comes to parent kids naturally in a scientific way.

In fact, there is no alternative to being democratic even when it comes to living life naturally in a scientific way!
