Public Transport Operators Must Practice Safety Culture - Niosh:

October 18, 2007

Safety Culture

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- Public transport operators have been urged to practice a culture of safety and health if they are serious in wanting to prevent tragedies from happening.

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the implementation of a good safety and health system by the operators would help reduce tragedies while improving the health and safety of employees.

"The strategy taken by transport operators in reducing tragedies also calls for motivation and a change of attitude among Malaysians," he said in a statement Thursday.

Lee said the recurrence of tragedies showed that Malaysians do not learn from them.

"Lax enforcement by authorities has also encouraged irresponsible transport operators to defy the law thus neglecting public safety," he added.

Culture News Blog Comment:

Safety culture is good, but isn't our culture a little bit too much safety oriented?

It's because of the burden of this 24-hour safety orientation only that at times we revolt against its intolerable pressure and go negligent causing a tragedy.

And then the exponents of 'safety first, adventure never' approach further justify their way of living, working and managing things in life and business.

They just forget that though both, adventure and negligence are anti-theses of safety but they are not synonyms, rather antonyms.

It's too much emphasis on safety only that causes negligence and hence tragedies.

We need to be more adventurous in our approach, which turns us more aware and avoids tragedies from happening.
