Teacher salary increases position district for success:
December 3, 2007
Last week's vote by the Escambia School Board to complete a five-year series of teacher raises, putting local teachers on a par with statewide salary averages, will pay off as older teachers retire and must be replaced.
It was needed.
But the question will be whether the district can hold that line, as teacher raises have been a priority across the state. Statewide averages are a moving target.
Education News Blog: Salaries in Education News (Continued)
Like many districts across the nation, Escambia is looking at a rising tide of retirements as baby boomer teachers begin retiring. That means many of our most experienced teachers will be leaving during a time when the district will be facing severe challenges and tougher state standards.
Replacing them will be a competitive business. The quality of the teacher is as important as any other factor in the quality of education in our schools.
Having good teachers doesn't guarantee that students will perform well. Also having an impact are the quality of the students, often directly related to the quality of their home lives, the training the teachers get, class size, the quality and application of the curriculum and other factors.
But any hope of improving the quality of Escambia schools will start with the quality of the teachers.
Education News Blog Comment:
Salaries in education are much less than salaries in business and that is a worldwide phenomenon. More so in the underdeveloped nations than in the developed ones!
It tells its tale in its own words!
Aren't the underdeveloped nations less developed just because they value education less than they value business?
It's the quality of education that lies in the root of business development of a nation.
And the quality of education depends on the quality of its teachers more than it depends on anything else.
How can you expect to get a good teacher unless you pay her/him a good salary that is at least comparable to the salaries in business if not more?
We need investing intelligently before we expect to earn good profits.
Increasing the salaries of our teachers is as intelligent a step as it is socially justified too.

Thank you.
Watch!
With a huge deficit of teachers coming up in 2010 and NCLB requiring "qualified" teachers, how will we make salaries comparable to those in technology, medicine, etc to attract people back into education.
