GORDON Brown's enemies will see the Campbell diaries as valuable ammunition against the PM. Campbell pledged not to give them such material - and has held much back. But his book does confirm blazing rows at the top of New Labour. At one point in 2001, Tony Blair warned Brown he would stop him becoming PM if he was ousted. Campbell recalls: "He told him he still believed he was easily the best person to follow him. "But he was not going to support him in circumstances where he felt that he was being forced out." Friends Blog: Secret Friends News 1 (Continued) That message was hammered home by Blair's deputy John Prescott. He told Brown: "There can only be one Prime Minister and we have already got one." Campbell says that even in the early days of 1997, Cherie Blair complained her husband was losing sleep over the feuds. He also writes: "TB's big concern was the feeling ministers were unsure what their instincts were meant to be because though we were the present, they realised GB was the future." Campbell also recalls a more light-hearted moment when Brown got locked in a toilet during talks with Blair on who should stand for leader in 1994. Friends Blog: Secret Friends News 1 (Continued) Blair thought his friend and rival "had done a runner" until Brown phoned him from the toilet. Campbell writes: "They both ended up laughing about it. "TB went upstairs and said, 'You're staying in there until you agree'." The former spin doctor insists he did not mean to make things more difficult for the new PM. But Brown's critics will try to use the revelations against him. And his supporters are angry the book has come out so soon after he took power.
