Sex education minus birds & bees:
20 Jul 2007, 0000 hrs IST,Sonia Sarkar,TNN
NEW DELHI: Your teenage son or daughter will complete the government's adolescent education programme and yet, perhaps, never hear that uneasy word - intercourse - mentioned in the classroom.
Or for that matter, masturbation or arousal. They might pick it up from television or the Internet, but, no, not from their teacher.
After "sex-education" in schools came under attack from political leaders, including former human resources development (HRD) minister Murli Manohar Joshi, the HRD ministry has mellowed down the content of the National Adolescent Education Programme (NAEP) to ward off potential protests from any quarter.
While words like masturbation, arousal and sexual intercourse have been deleted from the revised version of the training manual for teachers, diagrams which describe the journey from puberty to young adulthood have been done away with. This modified version is set to reach schools in a few weeks.

Republican Mitt Romney directly appealed to social conservatives in South Carolina on Thursday, criticizing Democratic rival Barack Obama for supporting age-appropriate sex education for children as young as kindergartners.
"Senator Obama is wrong if he thinks science-based sex education has any place in kindergarten," Romney told some 150 people at a restaurant in the northern part of the state. "We should be working to clean up the filthy waters our kids are swimming in."

Religious group claim that sex-education is "corrupting children":
Jul 18 2007 By Ben Anderson
A RELIGIOUS group is using an Oxted shop to promote claims that sex-education in schools is "corrupting children" and increasing rates of under-age sexual activity.
Health and education professionals have hit out at the claims made in leaflets available at Paydens Ltd booksellers and stationers in Station Road East.
Copies of "The Outrage of Amoral Sex-Education" have been placed in the shop by its part-time manager,Marcus Brokes, who is also company secretary of Christian Watch, a Protestant Biblical group.
The 67-year-old, of St Andrews Way, Oxted, supports claims in the leaflet, which attack schools and the health service for promoting the message of safer sex and the use of condoms to provide all-in-one protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies.
It says the message is "totally misleading" and claims "there is no evidence that condoms provide protection against a number of STDs, including chlamydia, genital herpes, human papilloma virus and gonorrhoea in women."
It also claims sex-education in schools "is promoting a homosexual agenda among children, propagating the idea that homosexuality and bisexuality are natural and should not be regarded as a problem". It claims sex education "is little more than the propaganda arm of the sexual revolution against traditional morality."

AIDWA: blind opposition to sex education:
Thursday, Jul 19, 2007
NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) On Wednesday criticised the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh-affiliated Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti’s opposition to introduction of sex-education in schools. At a time when more and more facts were coming to light about sexual attacks on adolescents at home, school and in public places, they should get the requisite knowledge to recognise and ward off such misdemeanour, the AIDWA said in a statement here.
Knowledge essential
It was also essential for young people to know about reproductive processes in a society where this knowledge might not be available to them in their homes.
The Samiti displayed its patriarchal mindset, turning a blind eye to the insecurities and dangers that adolescents, especially young girls, faced in a society where sexual abuse, violence and trafficking had become rampant.
By reacting to sex-education as if were some kind of pornography and by not accepting social realities which were the real obscenities, the Samiti was only strengthening status quo.
It is unfortunate
“It is unfortunate that its regressive thinking is finding an echo among some sections who should certainly know better.”
The AIDWA called upon all democratic-minded men and women to support the demand for scientific sex education to be provided responsibly to adolescents.

Keep off sex-education, teachers told:
New Delhi, July 17, 2007
The controversy on sex education for school children has taken a new turn. The Siksha Bachao Andolan Samiti, affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, has warned teachers that they may be violating the law if they take sex to the classroom.
In a letter to teachers across the country, they have noted that teachers can be charged under Section 354 of the IPC for outraging modesty of a woman, if they follow the exercises prescribed in the UNICEF training manual on sex education in their classrooms.
Among the exercises is one in which a girl and a boy are asked to shut their eyes and touch each other’s private parts. It is apparently an attempt to help students understand biological differences between men and women. “The teacher may plead that he has sought volunteers, but in matters of sex and touching/fondling with private parts, the consent of a minor in the eyes of law is no consent,” the letter said.
Dinanath Batra, the samiti’s national convenor, said teachers choosing to impart sex-education do so at their own peril.
But human resource development ministry officials said the sex education module would be reviewed in consultation with the National AIDS Control Organisation, and all objections considered.

Sex education: Lalu differs with Renuka:
Wednesday, Jul 18, 2007
New Delhi: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Tuesday differed with his Ministerial colleague Renuka Chowdhury on sex education for children in schools, saying that it was having a “bad impact” on them and was destroying Indian culture.
Ms. Chowdhury, who is Minister of State for Women and Child Development, said “sex education is not titillating. It is not supposed to excite. It is to demystify...Now when a Minister like me says yes we must have sex education, there is so much sensationalism.”
Opposing sex education in schools, Mr. Prasad told reporters that “whatever information is being given about sex is having bad impact on children. It is not good. This also has bad impact on society.”
Asked whether he favoured such education for children, the RJD chief said, “No, not at all. This is a very bad thing. Our entire culture can collapse”.
The Minister was responding to presspersons at Rail Bhavan, where he launched an Integrated Train Enquiry System.

Sex education immoral:
Saturday, July 14, 2007 22:11 IST
NEW DELHI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi on Saturday waded straight into another controversy when he said that sex education will create an “immoral society”.
Joshi said imparting sex education would lead to a collapse of the education system. “The proposed sex education modules are an encouragement rather than education about sex.
And with such exposure, it will surely lead to more and more single parent families in the country. It will create an immoral society,” he said.
“The whole concept of such a syllabus is aimed at creating market for global brands of MNCs and would result in global domination,” he said. “Boycott CBSE schools if they go ahead with plans.”
Meanwhile, the RSS has threatened teachers with arrest under IPC section 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) and 355 (dishonouring a person) if they teach “sex education”.
Education News Blog Comment: We have made it a big issue as if sex were not natural to humanity. We are scared of this beautiful natural urge so much so that we are even ready to keep our younger generation sex-illiterates.
And for that matter even we, ourselves, are the same too! I mean sex-illiterates. We only technically know what sex is, at the level of an animal only. We have never had a tryst with what human sex in its essense is.
That only is the reason, which has turned a major part of humanity a victim to various kinds of sex problems including premature ejaculation, impotence, vaginismus, frigidity and many, many more.
And we still have cheeks to oppose sex education in schools and society! Are we crazy?
