Sexual health gets scant attention in general practice:
October 18, 2007
Sexual-health services in general practice are erratic, uncoordinated and poorly planned, according to MPs and peers.
A survey carried out by the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Choice and Sexual-Health Group (APPG) found weak and inadequate services in this area of health.
The group of MPs and Lords surveyed and got results from 122 PCTs for their report Delivery of Sexual-Health in General Practices.
The survey found:
only 5% (334 out of 6,647) of general practices provide testing and diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
at least 70% of women are not being offered the full range of contraceptive methods
61% (89) of PCTs say they do not provide STI services at all although 12% say they have STI testing services currently in development
PCTs are not targeting services to reduce unintended pregnancies in women over the age of 18.
Health News Blog Comment:
If sexual health is not right, it affects the overall health of the mind-body too.
Or if one is not healthy otherwise, her/his sexual capacity immediately gets affected in a negative way.
But our culture is such as treats sexual feelings not as normal but as a dirty offensive.
How can the health remain normal then?
And isn't this only the biggest of the reasons that we have to live on medicines all through our life and pay hefty bills to the doctors every month?
I think yes, and I am speaking from my personal experience!
