Culture-News Blog: Social-Culture News LESS SOCIAL CULTURE GROSSE ILE - Music, theater and book clubs find few new members: October 23, 2007 by ZLATI MEYER  A growing list of entertainment options, a dearth of free time and increased mobility are chipping away at several Grosse Ile groups founded long before television dominated living rooms. As their members age, these mainstays struggle to attract new and younger people. Two clubs in the township are expanding or considering a change in their membership in an effort to survive. The Grosse Ile Musicale invited men to join for the first time in its 75-year history, and the island's 73-year-old still-all-female book club has put the question of how to survive to its members. But changes came too late for the township's 81-year-old community theater group, the Islanders. The group gave its final regards to Broadway last month, disbanding due to a dwindling membership. Despite opening its ranks to off-islanders and three free events in the last year, the troupe failed to recruit the 10 members set as a goal in June 2006. The Islanders were believed to be the second-oldest community theater group in Michigan. The group gave its scrapbook to the local historical society. "We put out a call for people to perform and to do backstage work for several plays we were going to do. We got one or two to turn out," said Pam Frucci, 75, who worked backstage for the Islanders for three decades. "If the horse is dead, get off." Culture News Blog Comment: Times are flying on wings, and so is society along with its social values, social priorities, social systems, and social culture all along. Who on earth has time and inclination for the old style theater any more? Why to keep sticking to the dead of the past? Let's live with the living, or else we go dead too! It reminds me of the people who give a great importance and value to the first love of their life and never forget it. It simply doesn't let them be with the one's they are at the moment, in its fullness and in its totality. That's dishonesty. Isn't it? They are emotional. By implication, all emotion is dishonesty.
