Sports authority promises escalator inspection soon:

December 31, 2007 by Maura McDermott

Cops and Giants stadium officials stand by at an escalator where people were hurt as they were leaving the Giants game against the New England Patriots.

A malfunctioning escalator at Giants Stadium that caused injuries to seven people will get a thorough inspection "as soon as humanly possible," sports authority president Dennis Robinson said today.

The stadium's escalators will be examined by the state Department of Community Affairs, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and the escalator contractor, Schindler Elevator Corp., Robinson said.

Representatives from the two state agencies and the contractor met this morning to discuss the inspection process.

The Department of Community Affairs has not told the sports authority when the inspection will take place, Robinson said.

The escalator from the top tier at Gate A failed late Saturday night after the Patriots' 38-35 win over the Giants. The bottom steps at ground level became bent, injuring several fans' legs and feet, according to State Police.

Two of the injured people were treated at the stadium, and the other five were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. Three of those people were still in the hospital today, a spokeswoman for the hospital said shortly after noon. The hospital did not give any details on their condition, but Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police said after the incident that one person appeared to suffer a fractured leg.
