Sports Illustrated knows Erik Bedard, but do you?:

January 24, 2008 by TIM BAINES

Sports Illustrated
Erik Bedard

Erik Bedard cozies his 6-foot-1, 195-lb. frame into a booth at Moxie's in Gloucester.

For a 28-year-old guy who's about to become a multi-millionaire; for a guy who's turned into one of Major LeagueBaseball's best pitchers; for a guy who caught the attention of Sports Illustrated so much that a writer and photographer recently spent time in town visiting with him ... no heads turn when he sits down. Nobody knows who he is. Not the hot waitresses. Not the businessmen in their suits and ties. Nobody.

And that's just the way he likes it. You wonder what kind of mayhem would ensue in the restaurant if Daniel Alfredsson parked himself into a chair.

While the Senators captain rules in Ottawa, Bedard exists on the periphery, the unknown superstar.

A guy with humble roots in Navan. And a guy who so much likes to remain low key that he's built a house in the area.

LOATHES SPOTLIGHT

"I don't want to be in the spotlight," he says. "You look at superstars like A-Rod and (Derek) Jeter, they can't go to the store and get a bottle of water. That's not for me.

"I'm a small-town guy. I like to stay around my roots -- my friends and family."

Flying below the radar will be a lot tougher once the magazine publishes its feature sometime in the next few weeks.

Sports News Blog Comment:

Sports Illustrated
Sports News: The first issue of Sports Illustrated, August 16, 1954, showing Milwaukee Braves star Eddie Mathews at bat in Milwaukee County Stadium.

Sports Illustrated is the largest weekly American sports magazine owned by media conglomerate Time Warner. It has over 3 million subscribers and is read by 23 million adults each week, including over 18 million men, 19% of the adult males in the country. It was the first magazine with circulation over one million to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice.

Its swimsuit issue, which has been published since 1964, is now an annual publishing event that generates its own television shows, videos and calendars.

The magazine's cover is the basis of a sports myth known as the Sports-Illustrated-Cover Jinx.

Erik Joseph Bedard, born March 6, 1979 in the Ottawa suburb of Navan, Ontario, Canada, is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles.

Flying below the radar is really going to be a lot tougher once the magazine publishes its feature sometime in the next few weeks.
