APPLIED SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY ARTICLE THE ELUSIVE “ZONE”:
October 1, 2007 by Dr. Jack Singer
We’ve all heard athletes talking about playing “in the zone,” “being in the zone,” “being in flow,” and playing “in a groove.” Exactly what is this and how do athletes learn to attain it?
DEFINING THE ZONE
This is a state of consciousness where the athlete becomes totally absorbed in what he/she is doing, to the exclusion of all other thoughts and emotions. So, a crucial ingredient of being in the zone is focus. But more than focus, this is a harmonious experience where mind and body are working together effortlessly, leaving the athlete feeling as if something special has just occurred.
As per sports news, the athlete feels very smooth and fluent in her/his sport performance, and their performance is peaking, while at the same time automatic and effortless.
Sports News Blog Comment:
A 'zone experience' overtook me when I was 27 - an out of body experience that was much more than mere sports psychology creating ordinary sports news! Rather this one could have made an extraordinary sports news.
I had lately shifted to Delhi and started my work over there.
In the evenings, I used to go for jogging.
I usually ran for half an hour at a stretch in one single go, but that day - I don't know what happened to me - I didn't stop after half an hour and kept running.
I went on running and one full hour passed.
I didn't stop although I had gone too tired, but I don't know why I kept running.
I got exhausted badly, but I kept running.
I really don't know why, but the sports psychology might be playing its role!
One hour and a half over it had passed by now.
And then something happened like an out of body experience, that left an imprint on my mind for life.
Suddenly, in one single second, I came out of myself.
Out of my tired self!
It was an out of body experience!
Absolutely fresh!
Not tired at all!
I kept running.
My legs no more needed getting lifted with effort at any single step of mine.
As if they had become a perpetual motion machine!
Not a single trace of effort!
I was going on leaping like a cheetah. My out of body experience was going on getting more and more intense! It could have become a spots news as such!
The entire scene in the field of my vision had gone so colorfully brightened up!
But there was nothing to read around that could have given me a hint that, along with seeing brighter, my eyes were seeing clearer also.
Now, today, I am thinking that they must have been seeing clearer also.
But, right then, it didn't occur to me that it could have been so, too.
As a result, it took me another 26 years (in the 53rd year of my life) to have the realization of the vision getting corrected instantaneously.
In fact, I was overwhelmed with my out of body experience!
I was ingesting each and every bit of it.
A feeling of utter lightness in the body, as if it would levitate in the air!
Like my body had lost all its weight!
The gravity was getting defied!
Was it the sports psychology or the sports physiology?
I was going on leaping like a cheetah.
And then I stopped.
I stood still and looked around in all the four directions.
It was all an open area around.
Everything was brightened up much more than it used to be on the other normal (so-called) days.
As if it had developed a glow of its own!
I felt like soaking the glow in.
The more I soaked, the more my body went on going taut.
Taut, and light, and fresh, and relaxed, and ready - absolutely ready - to jump into any direction it needed to - it was a classical out of body experience!
My mind was not thinking a single thought.
It didn't have time to do so.
It only perceived and did nothing else.
Perceived every single thing!
Through all its five senses!
Totality of perception - that's what it was. The sports psychology had played it role very well. I had created an unpublished sports news, though to myself only!
I started walking.
I felt I was gliding.
I reached home back, and sat down in a chair.
O my God, within a few minutes my out of body experience was back to my everyday mundane reality.
No, it was so dull!
I wanted to go back, but I couldn't!
I didn't know the way.
But the whole experience characterizing the real sports psychology as well as the real sports physiology left its vivid imprint on my mind, which I haven't been able to forget for one single second till date.
