Travel agency owner arrested:
November 13, 2007 by Sean Muserallo
A local travel-agency owner has been arrested and accused of mishandling more than $20,000 of a customer’s money. This is the latest twist in a long series of complaints against Vista Travel Service.
The owner, Cindy Pelter, was recently arrested by Colonial Heights police after a former customer swore out a warrant for her arrest. Now she’s charged with obtaining money by false pretenses.
Up until now, this was only a civil matter. But Dorrine Spencer wasn’t satisfied with that, so she pressed the issue with a magistrate judge and filed criminal charges against her travel agent.
Dorrine Spencer is still hot about what happened. In august, she was supposed to take 33 of her family and friends to Las Vegas. She booked the trip through Cindy Pelter at Vista Travel.
When they got to the airport, Spencer says, only a few of them had flight reservations, and even fewer had hotel rooms booked as promised. The total bill: $26,000.
Spencer alleges that Pelter used her money to book other people’s trips.
“And all I get is people telling me, ‘Well, you’re going to have to take this loss.’ Why should I take the loss?”
I called Cindy Pelter’s home phone from outside her front door. It was my second attempt in as many months to talk to the travel agent. A man inside told me to leave.
Travel Blog Comment:
A travel agency, at times, does act irresponsibly.
Any business, for that matter, that has to deal with a heap of money just by virtue of its being the kind of business that it is, often falls prey to such scams.
The more the money, the bigger the scams!
You have to keep your eyes and ears open while dealing with such business establishments.
Or if you are smart and creative enough, you don't need taking their services at all.
After all they are nothing more than middlemen only!
You can safely and easily corner them and get your job done yourself in a more creative and enjoyable way.
