Bioinfomatics, World Culture In Buffalo Schools:

August 30, 2007 by Lynne Dixon

World Culture

As Buffalo Schools prepare for the first day of classes next week, some schools are offering new curriculums that have many parents and students excited.

"You see the excitement from the kids from the time they walk in. And that's something new that we've not seen," said East High School Principal Geraldine Horton. The school is introducing a new bioinfomatics program with brand new state-of-the-art labs that could rival any university. "We looked at the growing industry in Buffalo and we wanted to have something to allow children to stay in the community and help grow the community."

Ms. Horton says East High School is partnering with UB in this effort. "We knew bioinfomatics was going to be strong. We looked at the medical campus and decided let's do something that will also promote the community, help out the community. And so bioinfomatics was born."

She says UB is providing guidance in terms of courses and curriculum. "I have staff coming in from UB. I have people coming in from Roswell that are here and partnering with our kids. And that's even more exciting." She said the kids see themselves being connected to something in the community that they didn't see before. Now they have developed a relationship with the university, and see career possibilities locally after school. "They see hope. And the parents see hope."

At Grover Cleveland High School work is being completed for the International Preparatory School at Grover, to be located inside the high school. The program is for 160 students, 80 in 6th grade and 80 in 9th grade, but will eventually go from grades 6 through 12. And our theme is bringing the world into focus, and we're going to be talking about all international studies," said Principal Kevin Eberle. It will be a tough curriculum that is outcome based. "They design the curriculum from the AP exams backwards. So they basically said, o-k, where does somebody have to be their senior year with AP exams. They said, o-k, we'll design it back and start from 6th grade forward and get them to the AP exams."

The principal says there will be smaller class sizes. "We're looking at truly having all the students be aware of what's going on around them on an international pace." As many as seventy countries will be represented. They'll be learning diversity, an understanding of other cultures, all while aggressively preparing for college at an early age.

Both schools will also have uniforms this year.

Culture News Blog Comment: The human culture worldwide is the culture of comparison, competition and race!

Between you and me!

Between the white and the black!

Between the brown and the yellow!

Between the first world and the third world!

Between Coca Cola and Pepsi!

Between General Motors and Toyota!

And between the Christians and the Mohammedans!

Ultimately, the world culture is fast getting trapped in the war of terrorism in the name of superiority of religion on the secular face of Gaia.

What is culture if not the end of race?
