World Wrestling Entertainment reports increased revenue, decreased profit earnings:
August 2, 2007; The Associated Press
HARTFORD, Connecticut: WWE, facing congressional review after one of its star performers killed his wife and son in a murder-suicide, reported a 52 percent drop in second-quarter profits Thursday after its latest box office attempt fizzled.
WWE reported net income of $7 million (€5.12 million), or 10 cents per share, compared with $14.7 million (€10.76 million), or 21 cents per share during in the same period in 2006.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected per-share profits to be 8 cents.
Revenue increased to $137.5 million (€100.63 million) from $119.3 million (€87.31 million) in the same period last year.
WWE shares, after opening Thursday morning at a 52-week low of $14.52, rose 59 cents, about 4 percent, to $15.11.
WWE shares have fallen nearly 8 percent since the June murder-suicide of wrestler Chris Benoit and his family in their Fayetteville, Georgia, home.
Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, and 7-year-old son, Daniel, placed Bibles next to their bodies and then hanged himself on the cable of a weight machine, authorities said. The three were found dead June 25.

Prescription anabolic steroids were found in the family's home, raising questions about whether the drugs played a role in the killings. A U.S. House committee last month asked WWE to turn over any information it had on steroid and drug abuse in pro wrestling, citing "questions about reports of widespread use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs by professional wrestlers."
That request sent WWE shares tumbling again.
Chief Executive Linda McMahon told analysts that the company has taken a strong stand against all drugs, including steroids.
"All of us at WWE were stunned and saddened by this horrific event," she said in a conference call. "We're committed to doing everything we can to helping our performers lead healthy lives."
The WWE said it took a $15.7 million (€11.49 million) charge related to the weak box office performance of "The Condemned," which starred wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. The film, which was panned by critics, took in $7 million (€5.12 million).
